Flowering Red Currant (Ribes sanguineum) is a deciduous shrub that can grow up to 10 feet (3m) tall. It likes drier open wooded areas. It is an early bloomer with clusters of pink flowers, sometimes white. Hummingbirds are attracted to the flowers. The leaves are rounded 5 lobed shape about 1 to 2 1/2 inch (2-6cm) across. The flowers are produced about the same time that the leaves are emerging in early spring. This shrub is a good choice for the garden as it does not spread by suckers or rhizomes as many other native plants do.
