Tall Oregon-grape (Mahonia aquifolium) is an evergreen shrub that belongs to the Berberidaceae family. It can grow up to about 8 feet (2.5m) tall and will grow in dry to moist areas preferring sun to shade. It will spread by rhizomes (underground stems). The leaves look similar to holly leaves, but are leaves of 5 – 9 leaflets. It has clusters of bright yellow flowers in spring and blue berries in the fall. It is a good pollinator plant. Tall Oregon-grape makes a good barrier hedge or screen with its prickly leaves.
