Blazing Star

Blazing Star (Liatris spicata) is a member of the Asteraceae (sunflower) family and is an herbaceous perennial. It blooms mid to late summer in full sun and is a great alternative to the invasive Purple Loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria) plant. It spreads slowly in a clump over the years, and grows to about 2′ to 4′ tall with tall spiky purple flowers, with some plants having white flowers. They grow from corms, that kinda look like bulbs, which are swollen stem storage organs.
