Agates

There are many different kinds of agates but they all have a few things in common. They are part of the group of minerals called Silicates, which is the largest and most common class of minerals. Agates are a translucent form of Chalcedony, and are composed basically of Silicon dioxide SiO2, similar to quartz. They are a microscopic or cryptocrystalline form of silica, where as, quartz is a crystalline form of silica. Agates vary by the other chemical in them.

It is usually found in sedimentary rock. It has a Mohs hardness of 3.5 and is porous. Commonly found in the U.S. Because it is porous, it is sometimes dyed, and when dyed turquoise it is sometime sold as the stone turquoise.

Jasper
